Kwasi Asare’s Kente Weaving Workshop in Pontiac, Michigan

Kwasi Asare was at the Pontiac Arts Center on May 5-8, 2022 for a special presentation and workshop on Kente weaving. A great time was had by all!

Hello Friends – Kwasi had a wonderful and joyous weekend workshop at the Pontiac Arts Center in Pontiac, Michigan!!! There was a diverse crowd at the three day event, and Kwasi was quite happy with the turnout and creativity of the attendees. The program began on Friday evening, May 5th with Kwasi giving a presentation on the History and Culture of Kente, which included a short video and discussion of his family’s Ashanti weaving tradition in Ghana. On Saturday, May 6th, Kwasi held the first workshop with 8 participants; on Sunday, May 7th, the second workshop had 10 participants, bringing the total number of learners to 18. The weekend workshop was so much fun for everyone that it will now become an annual event!

“It was excellent,” Kwasi said. “The interest, the fascination and the involvement was at a very high level from everyone.”

Using his specially-designed small Kente loom, Kwasi has taught Kente weaving to people ranging from 8 years old to 80 years old. While there were no young children in these workshops, there were many adults of different ages and backgrounds participating. Kwasi wants to encourage as many people as possible to explore Kente – that’s why he created the World’s first online Kente weaving class and he also offers different versions of his live hands-on workshops and his virtual or live multimedia presentations on the History and Culture of Kente. While Kente originates in Ghana, anyone can experience and enjoy the satisfaction and fulfillment of making their own beautiful Kente creations. If you think your school, church or community organization may benefit from Kente cloth workshops, demonstrations, presentations and classes, please don’t hesitate to contact Kwasi directly at (202) 569-5153 or email him at kwasister@gmail.com – Kwasi will be more than happy to speak with you and help structure an event that will meet the needs of your group!

Kwasi always has a nice display of Kente cloths at all of his live events, which affords people the opportunity to examine authentic Kente weaving in-depth and to get a feel for the Kente. Of course, people can also purchase their own Kente shawls, shirts, bow ties and other items. Kwasi’s Kente products are absolutely gorgeous and come in an array of colors and designs.
