Kwasi Asare’s Kente Weaving Summer Workshop for the MidAtlantic Fiber Association (MAFA)

On Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29, Kwasi Asare held a phenomenal Kente weaving workshop for the MidAtlantic Fiber Association (MAFA)!

This event has been one of the highlights of the year for Kwasi. While Kwasi’s workshops are available for students and people of all ages, education levels and backgrounds, from time to time Kwasi may work with groups or organizations of weavers and people with specialized interests in art, weaving or fiber arts. As with Kwasi’s workshop at Art Students League in Denver in September 2024, these kinds of programs often allow Kwasi to encourage students to take on and explore some of the more complicated stitches and designs that are similar to the beloved Ashanti weaving patterns in his Ghanaian tradition. Students from MAFA took advantage of Kwasi’s weekend course and pushed themselves to create many extraordinarily beautiful and intricate Kente weaves.

Through his video tutorials and his in-person and virtual workshops, Kwasi Asare developed the WORLD’S FIRST online digital Kente weaving course and made Kente weaving accessible to people of all ages, from 8 years old to 80, or even older. When working with elementary and middle school students, Kwasi helps young children create simple but satisfying designs. Their eyes light up with joy as they see their own designs come to life before them. Kwasi’s in-person workshops are structured so that all participants – regardless of age or education level – are able to create at least one beautiful bookmark or bracelet. However, Kwasi’s online course has video tutorials that encourage students to create basic as well as more advanced intricate, complex designs that allow for a lifetime of continuous learning and exploration.

If you have a school, church or community organization that would be interested in learning more about the history, culture and practice of Kente weaving, Kwasi Asare’s workshop can be tailored to meet your needs. The workshops are always a great joy for participants, especially young students who can take pride in creating their own designs by hand. The workshops are also a wonderful platform for community building and understanding the Ancestral connection between the African Diaspora and Ghana.
