Once again, just like last summer – we had a great time at the Colorado Black Arts Festival!!! Kwasi Asare set up his traditional Kente loom, and people were excited to see how authentic, handwoven Kente cloth is made. Kwasi also brought his daughter Afua, from Ghana, and she helped run the booth. We had a lot of great conversations with wonderful people. It was HOT – 100 degree temperatures all 3 days! lol Despite the heat, people came out and there was a lot of joyful laughter and uplifting spiritual energy.
At the end of Kwasi’s visit, Kwasi and his daughter Afua had a great interview with Brother Jeff Fard on his Facebook livestream from the Brother Jeff Cultural Center in Denver’s historic Five Points community. Brother Jeff’s program is quite popular in the Denver and Colorado; in their conversation discussed Ghana, Kente and what it means to be African.
If we may have missed you at the Festival, please visit our website and join our mailing list to learn more about Kwasi’s work and see some of our Kente products. Kwasi will be coming back to Denver in September to do a Kente weaving workshop with the Colorado Arts League, teaching Kente weaving using the special hand looms that he created. Kwasi is also doing a workshop this weekend with the Sankofa bookstore community in Washington, DC. On Saturday, August 3, 2024 from 12 noon to 3 pm. Kwasi’s workshops are available for elementary, middle and high school students, as well as churches and community organizations. Anyone from 8 – 80 can learn to weave their own Kente creations with Kwasi’s course and online videos!
