Kwasi Asare Kente workshops, Juneteenth and the summer arts festival season

Hey friends — the summer festival season is here and Kwasi will be doing a number of events on the East Coast, and he will also be in Colorado for the Colorado Black Arts Festival July 12th – 14th. Kwasi did the Colorado Black Arts Festival last year and we had a wonderful time enjoying the powerful vibe and we expect this will be another great year as well!

In the meantime, on May 19th, Kwasi conducted a special Kente workshop for the Cultured Expressions Sewing Studio – a specialty retailer in Rahway, NJ, owned by Lisa Shepherd Stewart. Lisa’s life passion is African fabrics, art and decor – and she has a great love and respect for Kente cloth. During the 4 hour workshop, Kwasi used his special small looms to teach participants how to create their own Kente strips which can be used as choker necklaces, bracelets and bookmarks. Lisa organized the event with African music, a light buffet and retail sales of fabric and African art. As you can see from this wonderful collage, the Cultured Expressions Event brought out the incredible beauty and magic of Kente!

On Tuesday, June 18th, in honor of the Juneteenth holiday, Kwasi Asare will be conducting another special workshop for the Baker MacKenzie Law Firm, at 815 Connecticut Ave. NW, in Washington DC. Kwasi will once again use his small looms to help workshop participants create their own Kente cloth choker necklaces, bracelets and bookmarks. Kwasi’s workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn about the history and tradition of Kente weaving, and why Kente is the most prized fabric from the continent of Africa.

Kwasi’s workshops are dynamic and fun! If your school, church or community organization would like to host a special Kente event, don’t hesitate to contact Kwasi at: (202) 569-5153 or email Kwasi at kwasister@gmail.com.

Have a Happy Juneteenth!!!
